Alton Lions have launched an Appeal to support Lions working on the ground in Turkey providing immediate, and short- and long-term relief to victims of one of the largest earthquakes to hit the region in more than 100 years.
On February 5, when a powerful earthquake hit, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) quickly responded to empower local Lions Clubs services by awarding a $200,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to the clubs in Turkey.
LCIF Chair, Douglas X Alexander commented: “The devastation that this earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks brought is heart-breaking, and those affected by this disaster will need support in recovering and rebuilding for many days, weeks, months, and even years ahead.”
All money sent by Lions, via LCIF to support this appeal, will go directly to Lions working with victims in the earthquake zone.
Rotarians are also working to support aid to the earthquake victims, and on Friday and Saturday, February 17/18, Alton Lions Club will join forces with Alton Rotary Club to stage a street collection in Alton High Street, to enable people in Alton and the surrounding area to support this relief work.
Lions and Rotarians will be collecting from 10am to 2pm each day and would value your support.
