We hear so much about older people and the issues of loneliness, but there are organisations that exist to try and alleviate this. One of these is Contact The Elderly, which has now been in existence for 50 Years. There are 565 groups across the country, Alton joined the list 10 years ago when local Lions responded to a request to start a local group in our town.
Every month tea parties are arranged by local volunteers either in their own homes or another suitable venue. Volunteer drivers collect the guests from their own homes and drive them to the venue. Usually the volunteers stay for the tea party, which enhances the social aspects of the event.
On April 19th groups all over the country arranged tea parties to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Contact The Elderly. Two of our longstanding volunteers, David and Chris Warner hasted a party for 12 guests at Inwood Court, a sheltered housing scheme managed by a local housing association. Chris baked a special cake for the event.
In order to continue to challenge of loneliness and isolation amongst older people our group is always seeking hosts and drivers. Even if you are only available once a year we would be delighted to hear from you if you think that you might be able to help us.
